Successful Flight Tips For Your Next Vacation

When I tell someone that I’m getting ready to fly out somewhere, their initial reaction is usually one of two things. “Oh cool! Where are you going?! Let me tell you about the time…” or “Oh no I hate flying, it’s the worst!” My guess is the second group of people are either nervous flyers (ask me about my flying routine to help with that) or have had some unfortunate experiences. Unfortunately I cannot do anything about  other flyers but I can offer some successful flight tips for your next vacation!

Clients ask me all the time for successful flight tips or how to have that successful solo trip. Check out all my tips and if all else fails order a drink, put on some noise cancelling headphones and take a nap.

Check in 24 hours before your flight – The sooner you get online and check in to your flight the faster you can board and chances are you will get the seat you want. If you do not have luggage to check (you are only using a carry on) then you can skip standing in line to check in and go straight to security.

Be considerate of others – There are a lot of people moving around an airport every day so it helps to have a little patience and show some kindness. This includes things like respecting others personal space, being kind to the flight attendants, sharing the arm rests, etc.

Dress comfortably and in layers – Chances are you will be on the plane for a couple hours, in a small seat, without much movement. Dress comfortably with shoes that are easy to slip off in the security line. Wear layers for when it’s cold in the plane but warm in your destination. I’m a big fan of leggings and sneakers myself. Compression leggings also help with possible swelling in your legs from flying.

Be nice to the parents with the screaming baby – Think about how stressful flying is for an adult. Now multiply that by 100  for a baby/toddler/child who has no idea what’s going on or how to handle it. The parents are doing their best and are probably panicking that the other passengers may riot. Give them a smile and maybe your extra pretzels.

Pack some snacks –  Even if your flight is only 45 minutes, pack yourself some granola bars, candy and trail mix. Something simple and quick to cure those mid flight munchies. I would steer clear of things like hard boiled eggs though. Planes are small spaces.

Pack headphones – Headphones come in handy big time when flying. You can watch your movies in peace without disturbing your neighbor or you can drown out the snoring of the guy behind you with your noise cancelling headphones.

Download movies – Sure, most airlines offer some form of free wi-fi but it can have restrictions or be spotty. The day before my flight I log in to my Netflix account on my chromebook and download a bunch of movies and shows. This way I don’t need to rely on wi-fi to watch Grace and Frankie. I can even watch while my laptop is on airplane mode. This is especially handy when traveling with kids of any age.

Pack your essentials in your carry on/personal bag – Things to pack in your carry-on or personal bag include chargers, medications, wallet, your kids bunny that he cannot go anywhere without and a change of clothes. If something happens to your suitcase along the way at least you will have your essentials and spare clothes.

Take advantage of the pet relief zones – Lots of people take their pets on the planes with them these days. Airports have noticed and now offer doggie relief areas to help with this. Here your sweet pup can stretch their legs, relax and do their thing.

Arrive at the airport at least 2 hours before your flight – I know this time frame can vary in different cities but as a general rule 2 hours is standard. Bigger and busier airports may require a 3 hour window. Checking your bags, getting through security and finding your gate can be quick or can take forever. Save yourself the stress and get there early.

Getting on a plane should be exciting. It’s the start of your next memorable adventure! My wish for you is that you have a stress free experience with the best flight attendants and friendly fellow passengers. If not, may your drinks be strong and your flight be short!
